Hello and Happy Thursday, folks!Audience Editor Edgar Ramirez here, back in your inbox to honor two great allies the LGBTQ+ community has lost: Dolores Huerta and Patrick Stewart. Huerta, the labor rights activist, civil rights leader, and United Farm Workers co-founder, died Wednesday surrounded by family at her home in Bakersfield, California. She was 96.“I’ve spent my life championing both labor and civil rights causes and getting to know diverse perspectives; I’ve come to see that the struggles gay people face are intertwined with my own struggles,” she wrote in 2013. “Let’s each do our part by being open about who we are, by accepting one another without shame or judgment, and by sharing our stories in every way possible."For actor Patrick Stewart, who died at 86, supporting the LGBTQ+ community was a no-brainer from the beginning. The Advocate interviewed the icon in 2015, in which he said being a supporter of gay civil rights "was always a natural and uncomplicated choice.""When I look back to my early career and early experience, my ease and comfort being in the company of and intimately close with gay and lesbian colleagues and friends was always, for me, the most natural, and I might even say at times appealing aspects of the life I was living," he said.May both rest in power. What LGBTQ+ Americans stand to lose if Republicans win the midtermsOp-ed: Republicans want voters afraid of transgender people.
