We Don’t Need a Movie About the Viral Lesbian Bar

Some things should live and die on the internet. The current discussion around the Boston Globe story about a lesbian bar in Greenfield, Massachusetts slightly loosening its masking policy is, I hope, one of them. Here at Them, we felt a duty to explain the discourse around the Globe’s Last Ditch article given how ubiquitous it had already become, but we’re ready to move on to actual topics that affect everyday life, like the precarity of LGBTQ-owned businesses in the current economy or the very real public health disparities queer people, especially those with disabilities and autoimmune conditions, continue to face. The internecine drama behind a single queer-run small business isn’t especially interesting to us; and to be honest, you’d probably find some of the same pettiness, albeit in a different flavor, at, say, a family-operated funeral home or a restaurant run by former college roommates. Would we declare fraternities “dead” if two brothers had a falling out over their donut food truck?No, it’s really quite simple: When people are strapped for resources and emotionally invested in the work they do, infighting ensues, end of story. It’s easy to see that what gives this particular case study sticking power is the opportunity it offers to dunk on “woke” queer people. Much of the media, however, does not seem ready to close the book on this subject just yet. According to The Hollywood Reporter, UTA — the talent agency that represents the Globe — is “fielding inquiries about potential adaptations for the article — both in the scripted space and the documentary sphere.”A Globe spokesperson seemingly acknowledged the interest, telling THR, “This story has certainly resonated with a wide range of audiences nationally and internationally.
