Bi the Numbers: Bisexuals Are a Statistical Majority of the LGBTQ+ Community

Bisexual Awareness Week is upon us and what an amazing time of year it is! The crisp winds of fall are beginning to blow; Libra season is nigh; and bisexuals everywhere are rejoicing — and if you’re not bi yourself, you should still be celebrating, too!As the largest contingent of the LGBTQ+ umbrella, bisexuals have led the charge in the reported growth of the queer and trans population in the United States. In fact, the latest Gallup polling from 2025 found that the U.S. LGBTQ+ population has doubled since it was first recorded in 2012, with bisexuals now accounting for 58.6% of the now 9% of U.S. adults that identify across the alphabet spectrum. This means that roughly a whopping 5.3% of all U.S. adults are openly bisexual, making bisexuals more common than redheads.Beyond the numbers, bisexuals aren’t just significant for their numeric contribution to the LGBTQ+ umbrella. Bisexuals have a rich and storied history of driving forward the fight for queer and trans rights. Father of the sexual revolution Alfred Kinsey — yes, of Kinsey Scale fame — was a practicing bisexual. Revolutionary civil rights leader Malcolm X was reportedly bisexual, according to some historians. The mother of Pride, Brenda Howard, was a proud bisexual who fought for bi inclusion in LGBTQ+ spaces in the early years of the modern queer liberation movement. The list goes on! Despite the erasure bi people frequently face, bisexual celebrities account for much of the LGBTQ+ representation we see on our screens and hear in our AirPods.
