For some reason, even my most offline friends seem to have heard the viral clip of conspiracy theorist Alex Jones shouting about the chemicals in our water supply that are making the frogs gay. The claim, most memorably made in a 2015 broadcast on his show InfoWars, is of course misleading: The herbicide atrazine doesn’t so much turn frogs gay as it does forcibly feminize them, and there’s no reason to believe it affects humans in the same way as it does amphibians, as PolitiFact noted. But just because this is a classic case of homophobic fearmongering doesn’t make it any less funny. For over a decade now, people have been joking about H20 “turning the friggin’ frogs gay!”And now, thanks to The Onion’s ongoing attempt to acquire InfoWars — which has so far included the production of a fully fledged parody show while litigation around the purchase continues to play out — you can get a gay frog shipped to your home.
